All the info you need on international merchant accounts

International Merchant Account

Sometimes a webmaster or ecommerce store will need an International Merchant Account. Just like an ordinary merchant account ,this is where a financial institution approves you for a line of credit thus allowing you to accept credit card payments online. The online buyer market is huge and not just limited to those resident in the USA so there is a requirement for international accounts. Sometimes though local banks who would normally provide this type of service get nervous if you are dealing with companies offshore and so will not extend credit. Given the current economic conditions, obtaining credit is probably even more difficult now than it ever was.

So what do you need from your international merchant account? It depends on how you operate your business. Some clients still work on batch credit card processing as they believe it cuts down on fraud but most progressive clients will want a real time system. People who buy online are not known for their patience. They want their products now so a system which processes credit card payments in real time is imperative to their success.

An international merchant account is also known as a high risk merchant account especially if you are also involved in higher risk business activities such as pharmaceuticals, info commercials, travel or the cruise industry. The facility will usually be offered by an offshore provider and the fees you will pay will generally be slightly higher than those available under a domestic arrangement. But it does pay to shop around and see who will offer you the best terms.

The benefits of having an international merchant account outweigh any risks. As with any business merchant account, the provider will manage orders as well as deal with security problems or fraud issues. You can process your orders via your own site which is a huge advantage as in the past you had to direct your customers to another site which could lower your conversion rate. The system will also retain sales information i.e. customer data which means that you can build up a client bank for repeat sales. As any marketing expert will tell you, repeat business is more profitable as it is cheaper to sell to existing clients than have to find new ones all the time.

But not all international merchant account providers are created equal. Some of them will appear to have little or no fees because they hide all their charges. Others will demand up front payments in order to get your business approved on their system and by their financiers but they do not guarantee you will be accepted and will not necessarily refund your fees if you aren’t.

What should you look for in a business merchant account? As you will be working in an international market you need 24 hour customer service and technical support by staff who can speak English. You do not want to risk your virtual terminal credit card or merchant account processing system failing in the middle of a busy period but having nobody available to fix it. Your customers will expect to able to communicate with your staff hence a proficiency in English should be a basic requirement for your business. It is also wise to pick a company who is experienced in the international merchant account business and not a relative newcomer still finding their feet.
